ORANGE FARM — ICASA

Hi

As you you are aware ICASA recently confiscated our equipment in Orange Farm.  Not only were the radios removed, but the poles and cables too. It would have been much more civil if the equipment was just turned off or infact we were given an opprtunity to rectify the problem.

The consequences of ICASA’s actions have really caused quite a bit of distress. Internet cafe’s that were lively and hubs of social and entrepreneurial activity have a morbid feel.

    Stop parading people for commercial gain. It really is uncalled for when relief can be sought within the provisions contained in the ECA. The Authority had to have acted within the ambit of the ECA - do you have a frequency spectrum license in order to carry out such activity?

    At “Habitat for Humanity”, frequency spectrum license is the oppressors tool and the ECA act is a vehicle for neo-capitalists to control and exploit the poor. Why should we pay for the air, why should rural communities suffer because greedy white ISP’s refuse to service the grassroots people. Sit in Sandton and abide by your laws, but don’t interfere with people trying to uplift themselves, to hell with Telkom and ICASA.

    @Numba - it’s not a black/white thing, it’s an oppression / control thing by the guv’ment.I’m a white WISP and have tangled with ICASA, my services are aimed at the historically disadvantaged but ICASA aren’t interested in that.As you say, to hell with them all, they are preventing free speech

    Djo. Since you are in Berea. Dabba has a good signal strength in Berea and Hillbrow. If you have a wireless enabled Laptop with properly installed drivers, run a search of available wireless networks. When you see dabba, click on it and connect. once connected, open your internet explorer and go to any website. You will get to the dabba splash page where you will find all the instructions on using dabba. enjoy the internet.

    P/S: Sorry Djo. If you are using a home computer and not a laptop, purchase a wireless PCI card from one of the computer shops in Hillbrow and install it in your computer. Once installed follow the steps above to connect.

    is it possible to access dabba internet using a cellphone,even if my phone is not recharged.

  • 21 countryboy // Jun 19, 2010 at 7:26 pm

    @latso
    Avoid using the 2.4GHz band for long range/hi power, rather use 5GHz with low power local APs.Be careful who you deal with.Read the ECA Act especially section 6 ! Good luck there are over 600 of us out there (according to ICASA)

    Finland just declared wifi internet to be a basic human right. I agree people regardless of Geography or demograph have the basic right to Know, to Have and to Be. It is one thing to be Privileged is to be informed. So I declare that to uniformed is to be living in a form of servitude because it is a violation of ones basic right to be able to make a choice to be informed or not. This coward and ignorant declaration made of the Habitat for Humanity is warrants an upheaval of questioning and is representative of the old world wild west adages based in Fear, racism, and bigotry. It is these ignorant people who stand in the way of progress. So pay no mind, keep reconnecting and keep pressing forth with asserting your Dignified and Noble attitudes towards being informed. Indeed it is achieving the access to the knowledge that will dismantle these old world adages. I challenge you Habitat for Humanity comment! What gives the ECA the authority to regulate these frequencies and deny people their basic rights to be informed? it is the right of us all. No one is parading poverty or impoverished patrons around for any typecast of any branding agenda, we have a mission and purpose here. Culture is Brand and Brand is Culture we are providing a fair and equal service, that should be a basic human right anyhow.

    I support Dabba goal to provide Internet phone service to those who are underserved.

    in the United States taxes fees are paid when we pay the phone bill to help out other people who live in rural areas. Dabba was seen on television here and was seen by Millions of people in USA. Karl in California USA
